Rock Recommendation: BlakRoc

Question: What happens when The Black Keys meet Mos Def and 10 other hip-hop artists?

What you get is BlakRoc – a blues-infused hip-hop collaboration that sounds pretty freakin’ awesome. Definitely check out their website – www.blakroc.com – for some cool material, see who all came together, and to buy the album.

Here’s the video for “Ain’t Nothing Like You (Hoochie Coo)” featuring Mos Def and Jim Jones:

Concert Review: Spoon, 12/11/2009, Portland, OR

I had the opportunity to see Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears and Anya Marina open for Spoon at the Crystal Ballroom in downtown Portland, Oregon last week!Tell 'Em What Your Name Is!

First off, let me just say if you’ve never heard Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears, go buy their album Tell ‘Em What Your Name Is! now. Based out of Austin, TX (like Spoon), they have a bluesy rock sound with vocals very definitely influenced by James Brown.  They were awesome live and the album is great from start to finish.

Anya Marina had a very short set, but it was great. She performed a song from the “New Moon” soundtrack called “Satellite Heart” that was pretty catchy. Check it out!

TransferenceAnd of course, there was Spoon! They pretty much rocked the house and had backup from Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears’ horn section on songs like “The Underdog“. They had a great setlist incorporating a very upbeat mix of their material. Among their set, they played my favorite, “I Turn My Camera On” and their new single, “Got Nuffin“, from their upcoming album Transference. Two words: AWE SOME.

Some obligatory bad cell phone photos:

Digital Tragedy!

For some reason, likely user error (me), only the first 30 minutes of last week’s show actually got recorded. So if you were hoping to have your socks rocked off by the show after the fact, my sincerest apologies because it was literally the best show in the history of the world. Really. But now, because of a glitch in the system or because of my own ineptitude, the only people who can listen to the show at this point are extraterrestrials who are in the path of the radio waves now racing through space at the speed of light. If you can get in a craft and intercept those radio waves, please save them and get them back to me to share with the world. If not… My bad.

As a consolation, I leave you with the below video:
