Outside Lands 2011: Review

Posted by Jason Soza on August 19, 2011 2 Comments

This was my second time at Outside Lands and I have to say, it’s definitely gained some traction! When I last went in 2008, the second year of Outside Lands’ existence, the headliners were Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band, and Beastie Boys (who canceled due to Adam Yauch‘s throat cancer and were replaced with Tenacious D), and while there was a pretty huge turnout, the crowd at this year’s festival was noticeably larger, especially on Saturday with the OK Go, Arctic Monkeys, Black Keys, Muse rockfest.

I’ll go ahead and sum up my feelings in a nice, bulleted, Worms-style awards list, accompanied by some lovely media:

  • Sounded Most Like Their Album: TIE – The Shins and MGMT
  • Most Spirit: The Limousines for hanging in there even when their sound guy didn’t.
  • Best Team Up: Win Butler & Mavis Staples on “The Weight”

  • Coolest Look: Arctic Monkeys for their 60′s greaser style
  • The Energizer Award: Phish and their 4-hour long set
  • Best Performance I Missed: Girl Talk
  • Guitar Throwing Champ: Matt Bellamy / Muse

  • Most Heard Variations of a Band Name: !!! (“Chk-chk-chk”, “The Punctuation Marks”, etc.)
  • Most Unexpectedly Fun Band: OK Go – they don’t need treadmills to rock!
  • Band Who Rocked My Socks Off: Black Keys

  • Best Non-Mainstage Band: Foster the People – their cover of Weezer’s “Say It Ain’t So” was AWESOME
  • Best Stage: Arcade Fire

There you have it! I’m still hoping Outside Lands finds it in their heart to remedy the situation they placed me in by selling me tickets promising “side stage” or “front of house pit” for Arcade Fire, then sticking me in a packed area 150 feet from the stage behind hundreds of other people and saying sorry. Come on Outside Lands, you can do it!

Oh yeah – remember when I said Vanessa Hudgens was at Outside Lands? I wasn’t lying! She was dancing right next to me during MGMT’s set:

Vanessa Hudgens @ Outside Lands

P.S. TUNE IN SUNDAY! I’m back for a week, then gone for two while I skip across to the east coast and then come back and hit BUMBERSHOOT.

Outside Lands 2011: Day 3

2:07pm: Win Butler from Arcade Fire just joined Mavis Staples on stage to help with a cover of Dylan’s “The Weight”.

3:37pm: Mavis Staples was so much fun. Now milling around in the vicinity of !!! waiting for The Decemberists to start.

4:27pm: Totally forgot that John Fogerty performs before The Decemberists! This should be fun.

5:22pm: John Fogerty is performing “Pretty Woman” — along with his solo and CCR stuff, such a cool act to see.

6:23pm: The Decemberists are on stage now, “The Calamity Song.” Rocking out with a political zinger aimed at Michelle Bachmann. Fun times!

8:17pm: Lame! Purchased tickets to see the act of my choice from front row and… well, you see! Ah well! It’s fucking Arcade Fire!

8:43pm: Okay. Good night. Arcade Fire is rocking.

9:54pm: Backstage:

Outside Lands 2011: Day 2

1:36pm: On my way to Golden Gate Park for day two of Outside Lands. Missed Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, but should be there in time for the start of a pretty epic lineup: OK Go, Arctic Monkeys, The Black Keys, topped off with some Muse. Bummed that Girl Talk is playing during the Muse set at the other end of the huge venue, but I have a feeling it’ll all work out.

3:23pm: OK Go has taken the stage, opening with “Do What You Want”:20110813-032438.jpg

3:37pm: Don’t know if you can tell from the photo, but OK Go is dressed in the colors of Google. Corporate much!?

4:18pm: Despite their corporate appearance, OK Go just killed it! Waiting for Arctic Monkeys now.

4:54pm: Arctic Monkeys are kicking ass!!!20110813-045133.jpg

5:33pm: Arctic Monkeys are seriously tearing it up. Seriously. Did not play “505,” which I would have loved to hear, but did get a lot of familiar tunes in. Closed with “When the Sun Goes Down.”

6:08pm: Waiting for The Black Keys to take the stage. Made it near the stage, crowd is huge, updates will be minimal because I won’t be able to reach my phone!

7:40pm: Holy CRAP. The Black Keys kicked ass. So much energy! Brought in some extra band members for their newer songs. Now… MUSE.

8:13pm: MUSE. Good night!

Outside Lands 2011: Day 1

4:26pm: Foster the People just finished at the Sutro stage. Awesome band, awesome set. They ended with a cover of Weezer’s “Say It Ain’t So”. Can’t go wrong there! On my way to MGMT now, followed by The Shins, then Phish.

MGMT:20110812-044054.jpg

5:23pm: MGMT has been playing a good mix of old and new, though the crowd seems to really prefer the old. Lots of dancing during “Electric Feel” and “The Youth”, not so much during anything from Congratulations.

P.S. Vanessa Hudgens was here.

6:13pm: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah rocked it!

6:18pm: The Limousines – poor dudes had their sound go out twice during “Very Busy People.” This stage is 100% solar-powered… maybe the clouds did it!

20110812-061913.jpg

7:03pm: Phish is covering Led Zep’s “Peaches in Regalia” during the first of their two sets this evening.

7:55pm: Big Audio Dynamite? They’re not from the US but they kick ass! Waiting for The Shins now.

8:45pm: The Shins take the stage!

10:27pm: The Shins rocked, day one of Outside Lands rocked, see ya tomorrow!

Tune in on SUNDAY!

Posted by Jason Soza on August 5, 2011 No Comments yet

Be sure to tune in at 8pm this Sunday for the last CTRL-ALT-Juneau before I head off to San Francisco to hang out at Outside Lands! I’ll be playing a bunch of stuff from the bands that will be making appearances at Outside Lands, like Muse, Arcade Fire, Arctic Monkeys, and more.

Next weekend, just stay tuned to KXLL and maybe, just maybe, I can get a call in live from the festival. Maybe. You should just stay tuned to KXLL in any case, really.
